Mathematics is an imaginative, creative way of thinking which is fundamental to everyday life. The language of mathematics is international. Learning mathematics is also about discovering where it has come from; why it is necessary and how different cultures have contributed to the way it has developed over time. It has a rich and fascinating history and has been developed across the world to solve many problems, for example in business, finance, science, engineering, technology, economics, public decision-making… and so the list goes on. It is a truly exciting subject which requires a great number of different skills.

There are a number of key concepts that underpin the study of mathematics. Students need to understand these concepts in order to deepen and broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding.

At Starclub International Homeschool, the mathematics curriculum is composed of four main areas of study. These are:

- Number
- Algebra
- Shape, Space and Measures
- Data Handling

As a mathematical problem-solver, each student will learn and use skills such as calculating; sorting; ordering; interpreting and evaluating; representing; analyzing; communicating and reflecting.

Students will consolidate and further develop their mathematical skills from the previous year as they progress through their mathematical education. They will apply the knowledge they gain in the mathematics classroom to the real world.

Starclub students will be following the Singapore-Cambridge Curriculum in Mathematics programme of study. The students will be taught in differentiated groups and lessons will cater for all ranges of ability. They will develop an independent approach to learning in an innovative and exploratory manner. They will be encouraged to take risks and find strategies to deepen their understanding and passion of mathematics. This will be done through a variety of activities – there will be individual practice at the students’ appropriate level, pair work, group work and problem solving – both in class and in homework.

The teachers in the mathematics department aim to motivate and inspire all their students within a stimulating, challenging and positive environment. Assessment will be both summative and formative; students will learn how to assess themselves in order to see how they are improving in each of the areas and they will both gain and maintain confidence in this subject to allow them to progress to their full potential.
